Meeting Agenda For December 2017

December 5 - Digital Terrorism and Hate

Our presenter for this meeting will be Rick Eaton. The Wiesenthal Center’s worldwide Digital Terrorism and Hate research team is headed by Rick Eaton, a Center Senior Researcher

The Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) released its 2016 Digital Terrorism and Hate Report at a press conference at the Museum of Tolerance New York. The report presented hundreds of examples of how terrorists and their enablers, racists at home and abroad, anti-Semites and other bigots leverage Internet technologies to mass market their dangerous agendas.

The Center, which regularly meets with Internet giants and law enforcement and intelligence officials at home and abroad, detailed how leading companies’ commitment to remove posts by terrorists and bigots.

The conference focused on:

• The sophisticated use of social networking platforms, led by Twitter, terrorists and racists. Homeland Security reported that ISIS alone was deploying 200,000 tweets a day. “Twitter makes strides against ISIS’ use of social media giant; Does little to curb online bigotry.”

• The burgeoning threat from encryption of terrorists’ communications will be detailed.

will be talking about all of that and more. It’s not a happy subject to hear about, but we must learn all we can about it.

Don’t miss this meeting!

December 12 - Board Meeting

The second Tuesday of each month is our TUGNET board meeting. In case you aren’t aware of it, our board meetings are open to all members. So if there is something on your mind, an idea you’d like to introduce, or a gripe (gosh, I hope not), you are welcome to come share it with us.

We meet for dinner at 6:00 p.m., meeting begins at 7:00, in the conference room of the Horseless Carriage Restaurant, Galpin Ford, 15505 Roscoe Blvd., North Hills.

December 19 - California Telephone Access Program

A Program of the California Public Utilities Commission, California Phones from the California Telephone Access Program (CTAP) provides free specialized phones and accessories for your phone to all qualified Californians. These devices make it easier to hear, dial, and call..

Live in California
Have telephone service*
Your doctor approves your need
*Equipment connects to your existing telephone

California Telephone Access Program (CTAP) offers specialized telephone equipment and network services at no cost to qualified California residents who have difficulty using a standard telephone. To be eligible, you must be certified as having a permanent or temporary disability and you also must:
Live in California
Have access to telephone service
Please note: You must have access to either cell phone or land line service to participate in the program. However, the majority of CTAP equipment only functions with land lines.

The California Telephone Access Program (CTAP)-also known as California Phones distributes telecommunications equipment and services to individuals certified as having difficulty using the telephone. CTAP is a California State mandated program, under governance of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). Equipment and some network services are available at no charge to eligible consumers. Californians who are deaf, hard of hearing, speech disabled, blind, or who have low vision, cognitive impairments, or restricted mobility, are eligible to receive equipment with certification by a medical doctor, a licensed audiologist, a qualified state agency, or a hearing aid dispenser. Offering free specialized phones to those who are eligible, we will learn all about it at this meeting.

These are things we should know, if not for ourselves we may be able to help someone else. Do come.
